On nights when celebrities are meant to shine their brightest on live television there is no telling what spectacles will arise. Kanye West rushed the stage at the 2009 MTV VMAs when Taylor Swift was awarded best video by a female artist over Beyonce. The world was just as shocked as Taylor Swift by this award show moment and honestly, no one thought we would see a more shocking award moment in our life time. Enter the 2022 Oscars… This years American Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences awards definitely gave lots to talk about with the “slap heard around the world.” However, neither of these incidents can claim to be the most shocking or the first award show debacle. In honor of recent events and award’s season here are the 7 most outrageous live moments of televised award shows from 1974 to present.
1. The Streaker of ’74:
In my opinion of one of the first award show mishaps is a strong contender for the most outstanding even by today’s standards. At the 1974 Academy of Motion Picture and Art Science’s award show while host, David Niven, prepared to introduce the best picture presenter, a thin naked man runs past him across the stage. The man who ran past gleefully flashed a peace sign and his completely nude body. Apparently, streakers were infamous during the era. Neither Niven or the audience were surprised. The audience can be heard laughing and the host quickly joked and carried on.
2. Nirvana in Chaos:
The MTV Video Music Awards are not shy of controversy when it comes to award shows, but even MTV feared Nirvana’s edgy music was too much for audiences. They would soon find out that Nirvana was in fact a musical phenomenon and ask them to perform at 1992 awards. Agreements about the performance were tense, but the band apprehensively agreed. The show was going great until drummer Krist Novoselic threw his guitar overhead as to perform a stunt and was hit on the head. Kurt Cobain then proceeded to trash the set, while guitarist, Dave Grohl taunted Guns N Roses’ singer, Axl Rose on the microphone.
3. An Icon Is Born:
Jennifer Lopez has never won a Grammy despite her winning a long list of accolades for both acting and singing. The “Love don’t cost a thing” singer may not have won her Grammy nomination in 2000, but she stole the show nonetheless. Her neckline plunging green Versace dress was so iconic it was all anyone could talk about following the show.
4. The Father of All Scandals:
As of late Kanye West could have his own news network to cover all his endeavors as well as antics. If the man wants your attention the man knows how to get it and you simply cannot avoid him. This was not even the most shocking thing he ever said on live TV, but it is the most jaw dropping moment in VMAs history. At the 2009 VMAs West rushed the stage and interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for “Best Video by a Female Artist.” Kanye began proclaiming the award should have gone to Beyonce, baffling everyone in the room even Queen B herself.
5. Miss Universe 2015 is…:
While the Miss Universe show is not necessarily an award show it is the highest honor in beauty pageants. At the 2015 competition, Steve Harvey mistakenly announced the Miss Columbia, Adriadna Gutierrez as the winner. Gutierrez is crowned and celebrated for all of a minute and a half before the mistake is announced. After the true winner was revealed as Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach there is complete pandemonium prompting Harvey to own the unfortunate mix-up.
6. Oscars in La La Land:
On a night where the film “La La Land” had already won 6 Academy Awards the envelope in front of the presenter, Warren Beatty, seemed to contain the wrong information. Evidently, he was looking at the envelope for the winner for best actress which had already been announced. As he looks to his co-presenter Faye Dunaway they seemingly hesitate to read it. Dunaway finally breaks the silence and announces “La La Land” as the 2017 winner of best picture. It is only when the entire cast and crew is on stage that they are informed of a miscommunication. The true winner was actually “Moonlight,” whose crew and cast could hardly believe following the mishap.
7. A Slap to Remember:
The 2022 award show moment that sent the world of media spinning was the live altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars. Chris Rock insensitively makes a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s hair, which is the result of an illness known as alopecia. Smith’s wife is clearly hurt by the comedian jab prompting Smith to confront Rock. Smith slaps Rock at what bystanders believe may be a bit, but quickly realize the seriousness of the situation. Smith then proceeds to shout at Rock to desist from making jokes about his wife. Witnesses realize that Smith is serious given his use of profanity and distraught appearance.
